Guildford Techincal Collage had an ICL1901 with 16k word core store memory and a mark sense card punch card reader. Programs were developed by hand marking punched cards with a black pencil which the reader then punched up, and the cards were returned with a printout of the content so you could check the program before it was submitted to the computer. A little bit of a slow process when one is based in a school 15 miles away, but some quite large programs were developed over the year that I had access to the machine.
