Making good progress!

By Lester Caine
7 August 2025

While the content of this site is somewhat historic and needs a lot of updating, I'm doing well on the first stage of the jigsaw with all the websites now active on the latest versions of elements of the web stack and I do also have some better control of fixing the remaining problems. I do not have any quarmes about making changes to adoDB or Smarty5 to shut up my current development environment of VSCode with Devsense when it nannies about non compliance or simply recommended changes to…

The painful path to Modernisation

By Lester Caine
1 May 2025

After what is best described as a couple of false starts, I seem to be finally making progress. The latest Rant covers most of the fun, but at a practical level, I simply had not appreciated that 'all' the autoloader does is looks up the relevant file of code. If we don't actually use the code when rendering a page then the code is never loaded which for large classes is a good thing. The caching of these classes is something I st…

Filling in gaps in my support packages

While my development platform has been well defined for some time even ignoring the recent problems with eclipse, other tools have lapsed or never even started. I've used Sage for accounting for a long time, but it has never been comfortable to use, so looking for something to manage bank accounts, both business and personal and is free rules it out anyway. I spent some time with Mistral yesterday working through a number of options and having first installed…

No AI is not a performance improvement

I've given up on Mistral for help with the current work on getting mapserver running on my machines. While it may be giving solutions that bypass the problems I'm trying to discuss, it just does not answer the actual question. I've got in a bit of a mess now, as I have got the cgi-viewer and tutorial stuff basically working, but they are hacks to fix error messages rather then tidying the scripts to reflect CURRENT requirements for Mapserver 8 ... despite the links claiming that t…

Seems appropriate to keep software development work here

By Lester Caine

While I was trying to cut down on just where I blog, it's fairly obvious that keeping all of the software development stuff here makes sence. I'm working on the mapper package which was always hosted here and other development and upgrade work builds on the historic material here. At some point perhaps I will pull everything onto the one site, but while they all work so well in parallel lets not rock the boat.

So we have some new articles on Security Certificate Renewal

This is a test post

Just trying the fix to posting new blog entries. The post ID is not known until AFTER the post has been saved, and has to be passed pack from the save process ... which is now happening. Next target is the timeout on the security key ...

And I also need to find out why ckeditor is missing on this site!
OK ... this site had been used to as a test of putting the .js files at the end ... but need to initialize ckeditor AFTER loading it. Just competing with the generic loader ele…

Current server status

By Lester Caine
1 January 2014

Still running a mix of versions of elements of the server stack. Some of the third party hosting is still running on PHP5, but the majority has now been moved to a version of php7.2, although we still have one site using .ASP which while the content is easy enough to move, the quotation form is somewhat more difficult to convert.
